Hedgehogs

"Топ-топ-топ!»—слышится в ночной тишине. Кто посмел нарушить предрассветный покой? Кузнечики умолкли. Лягушки квакать перестали. Не слышно и соловья.

И тут вдруг—«топ-топ-топ»—чьи-то неторопливые и безбоязненные шаги.

"Tap-Tap-Tap" is heard in the quiet night. Who dared to disturb the peace preceding dawn? The grasshoppers fell silent. The frogs stopped croaking.

Even the nightingale was not heard.          

And then suddenly "Tap-Tap-Tap", someone's leisurely and fearless footsteps.

Лисица насторожилась, махнула хвостом, скрылась в кустах. Волк ухом повёл и продолжал свой путь. Сова вспорхнула бесшумно и чёрной тенью метнулась подальше в лес. Жук, расправив крылья, жужжит, застрял в траве.

На миг стих «топ-топ-топ». И вот уже хрустит жук во рту у ежа-топотуна.

И снова, раздвигая носом росистые травы, бредёт куда-то ночной топотун. Нагнать его совсем не трудно. Он тут же свернётся шаром. Прикоснитесь к нему—вмиг уколетесь! Весь утыкан острыми иглами.

The vixen  was on her guard, she waved her tail, hid in the bushes. The wolf paid no heed, and continued on his way. The owl noiselessly took wing, and threw a dark shadow further in the wood.. The beetle, spreading his wings, buzzes, motionless in the grass.

For a moment the "Tap-Tap-Tap" has died down. The beetle crunched in the hedgehog's mouth.

Again, parting the dewy grass with his nose, he was a footfall somewhere in the night. To overtake him was not difficult. He imposed his footprints there. Curling up to him, he went away in an instant. Everything was set with sharp needles.

До осени бродят ежи ночами по лесам, полям и огородам, а зима придёт—где-нибудь под корнем дерева, в кусте, норе, укрывшись опавшей листвой, спят до весны, как медведи в берлогах.

Весной ежиха строит уютное гнёздышко и выводит в них ежат: двух-трёх, а то и десять! Случается это в любое тёплое время года: и в мае, и в июле, и в сентябре можно найти в лесу новорождённых ежат.

Until Autumn, hedgehogs spend the night wandering through the woods, fields, and kitchen gardens, but when winter comes, they sleep somewhere under the roots of a tree, in bushes, in holes, covered with fallen leaves, till Spring like bears in dens. In Spring, the female hedgehog  builds a comfortable nest,, and bears her children, two or three, then ten. This happens at any warm time of the year, in May, in July, in September, you can come upon newly-born hedgehogs in the wood.

Отец-ёж живёт вместе с матерью-ежихой, пока не родятся ежата. Потом удаляется и больше к своему потомству не возвращается, предоставив матери все заботы о нём.

Покидая на время гнездо, мать закутывает ежат в траву и листья. Лежат такие пакетики в гнезде—и не видно их, и тепло им в упаковке.

Пока глаза после рождения ещё не раскрылись, колючие из гнезда ник/да не уходят. Но как только ежата прозреют, тут же торопятся пойти посмотреть, что делается вокруг. Выйдя впервые из гнезда, они жмутся поближе друг к другу и от матери стараются не отстать. А если кто и отстанет, свистнет жалобно: «Ах, подождите!» Мать бежит назад, ищет отставшего. Найдёт—и носом-носом подгоняет: «Не отставай?»

The father-hedgehog lives together with the mother-hedgehog, until the young hedgehogs have been born. Then he moves off, on his own, not returning, leaving the mother all the anxiety about him.

Leaving the nest at that time, the mother wraps up the young hedgehogs in grass and leaves. the little bundles lie in the nest, and they are not visible; they are warm and hidden.

While their eyes are still not open after birth, the prickly ones do not go anywhere out of the nest. But as soon as they get their sight, they make haste to go and see what is happening around. At first, when they go from the nest, they press close together, and try not to lag behind their mother. If one does lag behind, he whistles plaintively: "Wait for me". Mother runs back, looking for the one that is left. She finds it and urges it on with her nose. "Do not lag behind."

Месяца полтора обучает ежиха своих колючих детишек премудростям жизни, а потом подросшие ежата разбегаются кто куда.

Ежи—млекопитающие животные и все—из отряда насекомоядных. В этом отряде очень разные животные: подземный житель крот, водяной зверёк с ценной шкуркой—выхухоль и самый маленький из зверей—землеройка.

Ежей—двадцать различных видов. Живут они в Европе, в Азии, в Африке. Только в Австралии и в Америке нет ежей.

Тенреки, что живут на острове Мадагаскар, тоже близкие родичи ежей. У одних видов тенреков есть иглы, у других—нет. Только шерсть щетинистая, жёсткая.

For one and a half months, the hedgehog teaches her prickly offspring the wisdom of life, and then the youthful hedgehogs are scattered who know where.

Hedgehogs are mammals, and all of the order of insectivores. In this order, there are many varied animals: the underground dweller the mole, aquatic animals with valuable skins, musquash, and the smallest of animals, the shrews. There are 20 varieties of hedgehog. They live in Europe, in Asia, in Africa. Only in Australia and America are there no hedgehogs. Tenreks, who live on the island of Madagascar, are also a close relative of the hedgehog. Some kinds of tenrek have spines, others have none, only a wool of hard bristles.
